Witherspoon first walked onto a logging job when he was five years old. All through childhood, he occasionally accompanied his father to the job, helping in any way he could. Thus, he grew up logging and knew the business from an early age. Eventually, he took over his father's job. His father stuck with him until his death, when the young Witherspoon realized the enormous task that lay ahead.
